Mayflower
The Mayflower, a 33-ton, 60-foot long ketch (schooner rig) with the home port of Port Pirie, was built on the River Huon at Franklin, Tasmania in 1871. She first arrived at Port Adelaide on 2nd September 1873. Subsequently she traded regularly to Ardrossan and nearby Parara (a copper mine in the 1890s) for several years. In 1875, she dragged her anchors and got ashore at Minlacowie, but she was undamaged and was refloated later. She then became involved in the Port Wakefield trade in the early 1880s, and later became a regular trader to Port Vincent and Stansbury. A photograph of the Mayflower can be found in the collecctions at the State Library of South Australia.[1]
After having had at least five different owners, the Mayflower lay on Snowdens Beach on the Port Adelaide River for a few years after 1916, where she gradually deteriorated until she became quite unseaworthy. She was then broken up and her register was cancelled in August 1921.
