The City of Adelaide had several masters in its lifetime at sea, but much of the captaincy of the clipper was a family affair. The original master and two of his sons captained the City of Adelaide during its busiest trading years on the South Australian run.

We have collected much information relating to these fine men of the sea. Take a while to learn more about them.

The Masters on the South Australian run:

• David Bruce - 1864 to 1867
• John Bruce - 1867 to 1873
• Llewellyn Bowen - 1873 to 1875
• Alexander Bruce - 1875 to 1876
• Edward Alston - 1876 to 1887

After being sold in 1887, the City of Adelaide went to work briefly as a collier and then spent several years in the timber trade between Canada and Britain. The following are the Masters during that period:

• Patrick Crengle - 1888
• John McMurtry - 1888 to 1891
• John Brown - 1891 to 1893
• Alexander Percy - 1893
• Alexander Young - 1893 (command of the vessel when under tow)
